These coins are refered to in the bible. These small, ancient bronze coins are known as "Prutah" or "Lepton" and are presently referred to as Widow's Mites - A name inherited from the new testament. The passage is as follows:
"And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld the people cast money into the treasury: a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which made a farthing. And He called unto Him His disciples, and saith unto them, verity I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had..."
